A Huger woman tragically lost her life Saturday after being struck by a loose umbrella while eating at a lakefront restaurant, authorities reported.

Dana Weinger, 56, was dining at an outdoor table at the Driftwood Grill at Lake Marion in Summerton, Saturday, when a strong wind carried an umbrella through the air, striking her in the neck and severing her carotid artery. She died at the scene.

“It was a strong, strong wind, like a microburst that came through and knocked not just the umbrella, it knocked all of the furniture, and other debris came onto where they were sitting,” Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell told KTVB.

“This is not an everyday occurrence. This is just one of those tragic things that happen,” Blackwell added.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

"Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night’s sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion," Driftwood Grill wrote in a heartfelt statement.

"We are grateful for the emergency personnel and community members who responded and assisted during the situation," they continued. "Please continue to keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers."
