A 59-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder Sunday after allegedly beating his girlfriend's husband with a metal baseball bat in a Food Lion parking lot.

According to Myrtle Beach Police, Edward McGill was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center Monday, the day following the incident. The 38th Avenue North Food Lion shares a parking lot with several other businesses, including an Eggs Up Grill and a Great Clips.

Police say Raymond Jett, 60, drove from North Carolina with the intention of confronting his wife and his wife's boyfriend, Edward McGill.

Witnesses on the scene reported Jett left a note on the windshield of the car his wife and McGill had arrived in before going into the grocery store. He then returned to his car and waited for the couple to finish shopping.

An incident report described Jett "run at" McGill while the latter was loading his car with groceries. The pair argued before Jett punched McGill in the head. From there, the fight continued until McGill retrieved a metal baseball bat from his car.

Video evidence shows McGill chasing Jett down before hitting him in the head and upper body until Jett collapsed on the ground. The "ping, ping, ping" of the metal bat could be heard throughout the parking lot, witnesses say.

With Jett on the ground, McGill continued landing blows to his head with the bat until a bystander approached and took the bat. Rather than stopping the attack, McGill continued to physically assault Jett until police arrived on the scene.

McGill is currently being held on a $300,000 bond. Meanwhile, Jett was charged with three counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk and third-degree assault and battery.
